Summer is just around the corner! One of my favorite things about summer is all of the fresh fruits and veggies I find popping up in grocery stores and farmers markets. If they are available where you live I encourage you to shop at your local farmers markets to help support the small guy. More and more are popping up all over. If you are lucky enough to have one close by definitely take advantage.
My first experience shopping at a farmers market was when I lived on the Big Island of Hawaii. I lived in Waikoloa and would drive up to the market in Waimea. The freshness of the local fruits and veggies is something that I will always remember. Also, just talking to the farmers there. How they got up early to pick everything and give tips on how to select the best. They would normally have great recipe ideas that compliment the flavors of what I was buying.
In an effort to keep grocery shopping more affordable, it is wise to shop for foods that are in season. They are not only cheaper, but generally more fresh. What’s in season? Here’s a list of some of my faves. You can go to fruitsandveggies.org for a complete list.
Fruits:
apricot
Asian pear
cherries
blackberries
blueberries
tomatoes
lychee
peaches
plums
melon (all kinds!)
raspberries
Veggies:
beets
bell peppers
squash (all of them!)
corn
cucumbers
eggplant
green beans
okra
radish
zucchini
Now you have all of these fresh fruits and veggies, but now what do you make with them? Here are some delicious recipes that I found on Eating Well to make best use of your fresh produce. Don’t worry. I even have you covered in the margarita department 😉
